Request:
Dr. Davis asked ITC for help converting a previously paper-based assignment into
a web-based project for her Arc 101 class. Each student conducts library research on a
different building as an important example of architecture. The deliverables are images of
the building and it's specifications, image and biography of the architect, and a
student's critique of the structure. Dr. Davis
envisioned a permanent digital databank for her students' work allowing them to share
and learn from each other's research. (2002)
Solution: Using PHP and Perl programming languages, web pages were written that
easily allowed her students to upload their images and text without having to learn
programming, html or ftp. Students are given the ability to search the database to view
each other's work. The web pages are
dynamically generated by executing scripts that read the uploaded information stored in
a MySql database. Web forms were also written for Dr. Davis to
easily manage the site.
The live Arc 101 website is password protected, but you can view some
screen shots here.
